B/ONE’s successful regatta premiere on Lake Alster

BAVARIA’s new sport boat B/ONE sailed in its first regatta at the 33rd Yacht Championship of Champions.

And the competition was fierce, with some 26 teams, all winners in their category. Some of the participants included stars like the three-time Olympic winner and America’s Cup champion Jochen Schümann, or the south-German sailing professional and European Dragon champion Markus Wieser. Over two nail-biting days they fought for the title in icy temperatures.

On Saturday, the three-man crews first competed in traditional fleet races against one another, including the exciting Dimension-Polyant Night Cup on Saturday evening. Six teams without a title in 2012 were invited to take part in this event to secure a starting place for the final day. In total darkness, merely lit up by theatre spotlights, the race presented quite a challenge to the crews. For the spectators it was one of the highlights of the Championship of Champions however.

The winner emerged on Sunday in tactically fascinating triple races where three boats competed against one another in each case. In the end it was Markus Wieser who won the YACHT Championship of Champions on Hamburg's outer Lake Alster for the third time. In the final, Wieser managed two confident wins together with Ulrike Schümann who was placed fourth in the Olympics and Hamburg’s local hero Matti Paschen.

Second place, ahead of 31 international, European and German champions, was gained by the three best German laser sailors helmsman and European champion Philip Buhl from Sailing Team Germany, Simon Grotelüschen from Lübeck who was placed sixth in the Olympics and Malte Kamrath. This time, the three-time Olympic gold medallist and defending champion Jochen Schümann with Gunnar Bahr and Ingo Borkowski only secured 3rd place.

BAVARIA is delighted to have supplied the perfect regatta boat B/ONE for the highlight in the German sailing calendar. The breath-taking races and fun the professionals had with the sport boats have created an appetite for more.
