The Windy 25 Mirage is a miracle of sportiness, with fantastic sea-keeping qualities, providing speed in safety and comfort, thanks to its precision WinTech V hull.
If ever a sports boat punched above her size and weight, then it surely has to be the sublime Windy 25 Mirage. Windy Boats began building the 25 in their Norwegian base at Arendal, with early examples from the late 1990s being powered by Volvo Penta’s punchy KAD44 260HP diesel engine, or the 280hp V8 petrol – with both options delivering over 40 knots. Hans Jorgen Johnsen designed the hull, employing a 23-degree transom deadrise, sharpening to 25 degrees through the midships section, to a knife-like 45-degree bow shape, with huge inherent strength being afforded by the Wintec multi-axial glass lay-up of her hull. The result is a precise, immensely manoeuvrable and highly responsive hull, giving a phenomenally reassuring driving experience and all-weather ride. The sea-keeping from these 2 ton, 25’ flying machines is hard to compare against other similar boats of her size – and this combined with a superbly ergonomic helm console, sprung helm and co-helm seat, clear dash and a wrap-round screen that you can hunker down below if conditions demand.
It is thus unsurprising that Motor Boat & Yachting’s 1999 review of an early 25 Mirage hailed her as the “The best handling boat in the world”.
The cockpit aft of the helm area is an open, simple U-shaped sofa – and the whole area can be covered under a camper canopy or a tonneau cover for daily use. Excellent engine access is via a hinged central insulated lid (yes – she is very quiet under-way), with smoothly moulded storage lockers beneath the seating and a stowage hold beneath her teak-laid cockpit floor. The recessed refrigerator and inset sink are set forward in the cockpit to port, and a curved door slides open to access the cabin. This is beautifully finished, with a hanging locker to port, concealed marine WC to starboard, and a central sofa and table, which cleverly converts into a prop double berth – although she’s an overnighter/weekender, rather than a grand tourer!
Another testament to the 25 Mirage’s initial “rightness” is the fact that production continued for another eleven years, with zero change to her hull and only small tweaks to her general layout. In fact, the hull continued into the Windy 26 Kharma, which has only very recently ceased building, so late examples of the 25 are much sought-after, and “BAZANI”, is no exception. She is specified with 3.7 litre Volvo D4 (260hp) common-rail diesel – so this is a proper 42 knot pocket rocket. Her cockpit cushions are finished in classic blue Sunbrella material (a very hardwearing, soft-touch fabric) and her bright Mayfair interior cushions show hardly any use.
Windy are a product of traditional craftsmanship, enhanced with the aid of modern technology. The latest technological innovation is the Wintec hull concept, which gives improved performance, greater strength and reduced noise throughout the vessel. The hull is reinforced with advanced multi-axial glass-fibre matting and Divinycell. This allows a reduction in the boat's weight of up to 20% whilst offering noticeably improved stability. All the Windy models are CE-labelled. This means that Windy meets all the requirements laid down for quality control documentation and product liability within the EU. In the process of obtaining approval, the company has also introduced new methodologies construction principles and more advanced construction production equipment, resulting in more cost-effective and quality-oriented processes in-house. But above all, Windy is a “Boat Builder” and not a manufacturer of boats, a philosophy, which characterizes their production staff and all those within their distribution network.
